Computer Won't Turn On? Common Causes and What to Check

When a computer refuses to turn on, the cause can range from something as simple as a disconnected power cable to a failed power supply, battery, motherboard or other internal component. The symptoms can often provide important clues about where the problem lies.

A computer that appears completely dead can be alarming, particularly if it contains important documents, photographs or business data. However, a computer that does not power on is not necessarily beyond repair, and in many cases the data stored inside it may still be completely unaffected.

Before deciding whether a computer needs repair or replacement, it is useful to look carefully at exactly what happens when the power button is pressed. Lights, fan noise, beeps, screen activity and other symptoms can help distinguish between a power problem, a display fault and a computer that is actually starting but failing later in the boot process.

For a laptop, a faulty screen or backlight can sometimes make the machine appear dead even though the computer itself is running.
